Alma

Hip Groups latest restaurant Alma situated in Auckland’s Britomart presents a tactile, warm and interesting interior complimentary to the expertly crafted Andalusian cuisine.

Supporting Architect Jack McKinney and restaurateur Hip groups vision, Material space was honored to supply finishes for this project. Handmade Italian terracotta tiles form the perfect background and frame for the kitchen and bar areas with their warm colour, tactility and inherent patterns play on light.  The handmade terracotta bar top tiles offer an inviting surface to eat and drink from displaying the variegto (marbling of grey and white clays) adding visual interest and texture to this expansive surface area which runs almost the full length of the space.  A pattern of colour and definition is added to the space with the inclusion of the Tivoli tiles, that interlock greens, black and pale pink.  On entering the bathrooms, one quickly notices that this space is also treated with the same attention and a clear objective to continue the language of the restaurant into this amenity.  Handmade terracotta tiles line the walls in seductive gloss and matt green glazes, the floor boasting a durable baked lava stone with recycled glass glazed pattern.
